2009 Lulu Of The Year: Danielle Corsetto

2009 Lulu of the Year Danielle Corsetto entertains her large and loyal fanbase 5 days a week with the webcomic Girls With Slingshots. Started in October 2004, Girls With Slingshots features the adventures of the cynical Hazel, the spirited Jamie, a cactus named Pedro, and all their friends.

Danielle has been a lifelong cartoonist, creating her first strip, Fat Cat, at the tender age of eight. She followed that up with Max and Jazz in elementary school, Rae in middle school, Fried Pudding in high-school, and Hazelnuts (the precursor to Girls With Slingshots) right before college. Larry and Caroline was created for the Hagerstown Herald-Mail Newspaper’s kids section, and the autobiographical Ramblers for her college paper.

Danielle also wrote and drew The New Adventures of Bat Boy for the Weekly World News, taking the reins from Bat Boy’s former creator Peter Bagge. And if the new “Lulu” mascot on our website looks familiar: Danielle designed her too!

But it is the immensely popular webcomic Girls With Slingshots, supported largely by reader donations and sales of her self-published GWS collections, that has put Danielle on the map.

  10. I’m addicted to the Girls and am SO happy that this wonderful strip is being recognized and rewarded.

In addition, Danielle is AWESOME. Just a fantastic person (based on the incredibly limited interaction I’ve had with her…) and deserves all the accolades available.

  11. Yay! I love this webcomic – it’s one I must read every day it updates. I think it’s one of the best out there and I’m glad so many others agree with me.

  12. You rock girl! I dream of the day I am making enough as an artist myself to be able to buy your books and send them off to family and friends. Meanwhile, I’ll read and vote!!

  13. Congrats, Danielle. Your comic is ten kinds of awesome (and funny).
